5 Key Phrases to Learn When Traveling Internationally

Updated: Mar 26, 2022

Hey, fellow travelers! A friend (and client) just returned from the Mediterranean (Italy to be specific) and was so glad that she had practiced some basic phrases in Italian before her trip!

Many of the folks that you'll encounter in shops and restaurants internationally DO speak English.  However, they always welcome an American trying to communicate with them in their native language.  Don't worry if your pronunciation isn't the greatest, they'll appreciate your effort!

And it may lead to a shared moment of laughter, or an impromptu language coaching session from a native. Trust me, this tip is tried and true.

Here are the five key phrases that you'll probably need when ordering at a bar or restaurant.  Let's assume that you already have 'yes/no," "please/thank you," and "excuse me" in your repertoire.

"May I have?"

"I'm allergic to (or I don't eat)"

"Where is the bathroom?"

"Is the tip included?"

"Sorry, I don't speak more... ."

Having food allergies myself, I found knowing these phrases to be very helpful. Apps and tools like Duolingo and Google translate are very handy. Duolingo is great for learning new languages or brushing up on the ones you do know. While Google Translate is perfect for those in the moment conversations.

You'll enjoy traveling out of the country more if you make an effort to embrace their culture by learning to use some key phrases.
