Doing Research In The Real World

This has to be one of my most often borrowed textbooks that rarely lingers on my shelves! Colleagues, doctoral students and masters students alike will find something of interest here--whether it be used as a reminder of terminology, or a quick introduction to a new field. With new material on surveys, secondary data, and digital research as well as a fully integrated supporting digital research, this new edition is still the clear and accessible overview of the practicalities of doing research in the 'real world.'
This is a large book - however the way it is written helps the reader to break down the sections to research and make them seem more manageable. It is a really helpful book and I will be sharing it with my students.
This is really helpful book that my students enjoy. It helps demystify research concepts in a practical and involved manner. Some books on research can be cumbersome to navigate but this book is written in a way that turns students on to research and not the opposite. It encourages the reader to think logically about the sequencing of the research process without making the process seem scary to them. Very worthwhile addition to my reading list.
In Doing Research in the Real World: Third Edition, David E. Gray (Professor of Leadership and Organisational Behaviour at the University of Greenwich) draws on his years of experience in undertaking and supervising research, as well as teaching research methods, to produce a comprehensive and accessible guide to conducting research. The book provides an introduction to the world of research, taking the reader beyond simple instruction and illustrating the undertaking and application of research in the real world. The text has a logical structure, beginning with epistemology and research principles, before moving on to consider research methodologies, including chapters on evaluation and action research, in addition to the standard qualitative and quantitative sections. The third section discusses data collection methods, (reiterating the distinction between methodology and method) covering a range of approaches, and the final section looking at analysis and result dissemination, including preparing for a viva.
A lot of time and thought has been invested in the format of this book, from the online resources and author videos, to the structure of the text as well. Chapter objectives, top tips, and summaries help the reader to consolidate their learning throughout, and the real life examples simultaneously demystify the research process and illuminate the complexity and messiness of actual research. The text provides a lot of practical, adaptable information, which will further support inexperienced researchers, i.e. through the inclusion of an example consent form, gantt chart, and links to literature databases by discipline.
Gray skilfully explains complex and daunting concepts, such as the philosophy of research, in an unpretentious manner, and, as the book progresses, builds the readers confidence in their own knowledge and abilities. The interactive nature of the book and its use of videos is a real strength, making it easier to engage with and, along with the quality of the content, appealing.
David Gray equips readers with the skills necessary to design and implement their own research project. The book covers all the essential aspects of actually doing research, providing coverage of both quantitative and qualitative methods, and dealing with all the main elements of the research process and the design of appropriate research tools.
Practically focused throughout, Doing Research in the Real World encourages the reader to develop an awareness of the real nature of research, and the means by which data can be collected, validated and interpreted.
Thirty-three researchers from across the globe visited the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research (BCTR) last month to learn how to conduct research through community partnerships that will inform real-world practices and decisions.
One important challenge researchers face when designing a study is to find the right balance between ensuring internal validity, or the degree to which a study allows unambiguous causal inferences, and external validity, or the degree to which a study ensures that potential findings apply to settings and samples other than the ones being studied (Brewer, 2000). Unfortunately, these two kinds of validity tend to be difficult to achieve at the same time, in one study. This is because creating a controlled setting, in which all potentially influential factors (other than the experimentally-manipulated variable) are controlled, is bound to create an environment that is quite different from what people naturally encounter (e.g., using a happy movie clip to promote helpful behavior). However, it is the degree to which an experimental situation is comparable to the corresponding real-world situation of interest that determines how generalizable potential findings will be. In other words, if an experiment is very far-off from what a person might normally experience in everyday life, you might reasonably question just how useful its findings are.
However you access the content the Third Edition guides you smoothly through the research process from start to finish setting out the skills needed to design and conduct effective research and introduces the reader to the reality of conducting research in the real world. It gives practical advice on how best to select appropriate projects, design strategies, sources and methods and provides the tools needed to collect, analyze and present data.
David Gray's clear and accessible introduction starts by setting out best approaches to the design of appropriate research tools, and leads the reader in to issues of data collection, analysis and writing up. Practically focused throughout, this book encourages the reader to develop an awareness of the real nature of research, and the many means by which data can be collected, validated and interpreted.

Who: Ideal for early-career researchers (including graduate students and post-docs) interested in doing research in real-world settings and for established investigators who wish to develop expertise in conducting research with communities, agencies, and organizations.
What: The Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research (BCTR) is offering a translational research institute in summer 2017. Over several decades, the BCTR has developed extensive expertise in conducting research in real-world settings and translating empirical findings into practice. The institute will provide intensive training, discussion, and reflection on overcoming typical challenges in conducting research in real-world settings like service agencies, health care institutions, community organizations, and other non-academic partners.
Each session of the Summer Institute will offer solutions to key challenges researchers face in doing translational research. All presenters will provide practical techniques, offering tools participants can use immediately in their own research projects. By keeping enrollment limited, we will offer personalized feedback, addressing issues and challenges participants bring from their own work.
Why: Researchers are increasingly conducting studies in community settings and applying for grants that require documentation of real-world impact. Funders frequently require components such as dissemination plans, stakeholder engagement, or community participation. To meet these new demands, researchers increasingly collaborate with non-academic groups and craft research questions and results that inform practice or policy. Specific, practical guidance in the best ways to conduct research in real-world settings, however, is lacking. This summer institute aims to fill that gap.
There's a study you read about every now and then in the news and it goes something like this: A researcher randomly showed participants pictures of a smiling man and a frowning man. Then the researcher asked them to donate some money to charity. The research found that those who saw a smiling picture donated more, on average, than those who saw a frowning picture. The conclusion was something like smiling is contagious and makes us happier and more generous. But there's a problem with this. Let's find out what the limitations of this kind of study are through this lesson on conducting psychology research in the real world. 59ce067264
